Lakes Creek No. 2 Sewage Pump Station Civil Safety Upgrade
A civil safety upgrade at Lakes Creek No. 2 sewage pump station, giving operators safe access to the wet well.
Fitzroy River Water operators at Lakes Creek No. 2 open the wet well through a pedestrian rated aluminium hatch in a new 400 mm slab, and their switchboard stands clear of the well on its own slab. Before 2016 the wet well and switchboards shared one small block building, an arrangement that no longer met current safety legislation. The building and the asbestos in its soffit are gone.
The pump station operated normally the whole time, and an electrical contractor was upgrading the same site alongside us. Everything the electrician needed had to be cored and in place before the new slab was poured, because the whole purpose of that slab was a safe cover over the well. The hatch was set to line up with the existing step irons, and extra irons were added for the raised level. An operator climbing down meets a continuous ladder.
