Maureen Lawrence Reserve Footbridge Renewals
Two footbridges built back into the flood damaged creek line at Maureen Lawrence Reserve, Ferny Hills.
Both new footbridges went back into the creek line that damaged the old ones, and the build was planned around water from the start. The creek was dewatered to work in the channel, the old bridges and abutments came out, and new abutments went in with their footings and batters protected against erosion. Walkers in Maureen Lawrence Reserve at Ferny Hills cross spans of 13 and 10 metres with stainless steel bike safe grab rails.
The design assumes the next flood will come. City of Moreton Bay ruled out timber and required corrosion resistance built into the material. Composite fibre bearers carry both spans with nothing to rot after inundation, and the 30 mm open mesh deck lets floodwater and fine debris pass through the bridge. With no galvanising on the stainless rails to fail at the welds, a flood leaves a clean up for Council's crews.
