Bongaree Staircase Renewal and Asbestos Remediation

Buckleys Hole Conservation Park at Bongaree is protected estate, and its beach access is used daily by Bribie Island residents and visitors. The old concrete stair and sandy track sat on ground containing surficial asbestos. The new FRP stair and elevated walkway hold people up off that ground, on a structure with stainless steel connections chosen for salt spray and wind driven sand.

Every hour spent working in the dune was exposure. The design kept site time short. The stair and walkway were manufactured in sections off site and assembled in place, and the foundations were chosen to limit disturbance of the ground and airborne fibres. Most of the labour happened in a factory, and the work inside the controlled zone was mostly assembly.
