Hay Street Footbridge Replacement
A 9.7 metre composite footbridge linking two residential streets across a creek in Brisbane's north west, used daily by local residents.
The new Hay Street footbridge weighs about 3 tonnes, fully assembled and decked. That is light enough to set in one lift onto the abutments that carried the old timber bridge, so Brisbane City Council kept its existing substructure and rock pitch walls, and residents had their crossing back inside a June window. We did the demolition and installation for Wagners CFT Manufacturing.
Old abutments leave no margin. The bridge arrived in one piece with a 30 mm camber built in. With nothing to adjust on the structure, all of the tolerance had to come out of the substructure before the crane arrived. We ground back and repaired the abutment and rock pitch walls. The tie downs sit under the end deck panels, which came off before the lift and went back on once the bridge was landed and fixed down.
