Iona College Lighting Pole Foundations
Foundations for six 30 metre lighting poles on the sports fields at Iona College.
Six 30 metre light poles now stand over the Iona College sports fields, and each has to stay up in a wind event over a field full of students. We built the civil works under them: the foundations, the concrete pedestals formed around the pole bolts, and the earthworks. Pedestal pours ranged from 16 to 38 cubic metres, each planned around truck access across fields still in use.
The foundation area held a layer of buried rubbish, and a pedestal for a 30 metre pole cannot sit on fill full of timber, plastic and tyres. All of it came out. The crew sieved and sorted it on site into clean concrete, contaminated concrete and general waste, and each stream went to its own disposal. The foundations went in on clean, sound ground.
