Tumby Bay Mangrove Boardwalk
A 78 metre elevated composite fibre boardwalk through the Berryman Street mangroves at Tumby Bay, South Australia.
The mangroves at Berryman Street are the reason people visit that end of Tumby Bay, on South Australia's Eyre Peninsula. Visitors walk 78 m into the stand on a 1.8 m wide raised deck above the mud, with handrails the full length and ramps at each end.
A mangrove stand has no hardstand, no water deep enough for a barge and no ground that will carry a machine. The boardwalk was built off itself, with every member light enough for the crew to carry along the finished deck and set by hand, and 8 m joists kept the number of pile lines through the mud down. The same light componentry travelled flat from Queensland, which is how a Queensland crew came to build it. It now stands in saline mud and tidal splash with no timber to rot and no coating to renew.
