A stretch of The Promenade at Varsity Lakes that used to be a garden bed is now a place to stop. Walkers can step out onto about 70 m² of composite deck over the lake edge and sit on two tiers of sandstone block seating. The deck is colour matched to the boardwalks either side, and the Promenade reads as one continuous walk.

Seventeen retained trees surround the site, and the deck, seating and footings all sit in or beside their root zones. Root investigation before each excavation fixed the footing positions. The 25 m of sandstone blocks needed a crane, and the lift plan was worked out around the canopy and the protection zones. The light composite deck went in with compact plant working off the existing path, and walkers and cyclists used the Promenade as normal while the work went on.
