Warburton Mountain Bike Trail Bridges
Two single span steel trail bridges over seasonal waterways on the Warburton Mountain Bike Destination in the Yarra Ranges.
A 300 PFC main beam for a 10 m span weighs about 400 kg, and neither bridge site at Warburton has a road. The two bridges carry riders and maintenance crews over seasonal waterways on the 100 km trail network, at spans of 10.25 m and 10.85 m, with galvanised steel frames and FRP mesh decks.
The only way in was along the finished trail, and it had to come through undamaged. Every other component was flat packed and sized for the trail, and the main beams were carried in whole by machine along a surveyed route. Each span went up as one unspliced member. The work ran in Yarra State Forest under a waterways permit, with procedures for high flows after rain and for summer fire danger, when the trail was the only way out.
