2019Completed

More than 1.5 million people visit Cape Byron each year. The timber lookout on the rock outcrop at The Pass dated from 1998, and the Wategos Beach track, the only beach access from the eastern end of Marine Parade, from the year after. Visitors stand on the same outcrop and walk down to the same beach as before, on a 40 square metre viewing platform and new FRP walkways on the original alignments.

Fisherman's Lookout stands on bare rock in the surf zone, with no ground to dig into. Each FRP post sits in a stainless steel stirrup fixed to the rock, and every part of the footing is in materials that hold up to daily salt spray and sun. NSW National Parks specified FRP for the substructure and kept hardwood for the handrails, where timber is easy to see and easy to replace.
