Holy Spirit College Boardwalk
A 34 metre accessible boardwalk with 1:20 ramps, closing a break in the walking link along Holy Spirit College, Fitzgibbon.
Along the Beams Road frontage of Holy Spirit College at Fitzgibbon, a culvert crossing and low ground broke the walking link. Students and staff cross it on a 34 metre boardwalk, 2.5 metres wide, with 1:20 ramps and handrails on both sides. Wagners Composite Fibre Technologies supplied the composite structure and we built the foundations, abutments and boardwalk.
Most of the challenge was underground. The alignment crosses a culvert and runs beside a retaining wall, so the piers were founded to three different rules: standard piers into stiff clay, and piers near the culvert or the wall taken down to the depth of that structure. Each depth was confirmed on site, position by position. The light composite members suited the narrow corridor between the two, and the finished boardwalk needs little upkeep around the school timetable.
