Mater Private Hospital Redland Chiller Works

Building works around a rooftop chiller replacement at Mater Private Hospital Redland, kept watertight and fire separated while the hospital ran.

The new chiller for Mater Private Hospital Redland was bigger than the roof opening it had to come through, the plant deck was too small to take it, and the hospital was open to patients. For Johnson Controls Australia we extended the plinth, opened and closed the roof around the crane lift, and fitted a discharge chute and flue metalwork.

An open hospital roof leaks as soon as the weather turns, so the sequence mattered most. The plinth was cured before the crane arrived, the roof was opened only as far as the unit needed, and purlins, struts, bird mesh and flashings went back the moment the chiller was set. Inside, a temporary stud and ply wall with a door isolated the works area. When it came out, the fire door was reinstated and every penetration made good.
