Paradise Avenue to Sonia Street Boardwalk, Miami
An elevated boardwalk with a barefoot friendly deck, closing the Miami shared path gap between Paradise Avenue and Sonia Street.
Walkers and riders heading from Sonia Street to the Pizzey Park sporting precinct go straight across the reserve that used to send them the long way round. A lit, 3 metre wide boardwalk crosses the low, wet ground at a grade no steeper than 1:33, which lets wheelchairs travel it without landings. We designed and built it for City of Gold Coast, taking Council's concept through to certified construction drawings.
Council wrote the deck for bare feet. Swimmers, junior sport players and beachgoers cross the reserve wet and shoeless, so the specification called for P5 slip resistance, the top of the pendulum scale, in both directions of travel, with grit of a "wet barefoot friendly grade" impregnated during manufacture. Because the grit is moulded into the composite, the deck keeps that grip for its whole life.
