Fellmonger Park and Anita Street Footbridges, Redland
Two prefabricated pedestrian bridges through core koala habitat at Fellmonger Park, Ormiston, and Anita Street, Redland Bay.
Both crossings sit inside reserves mapped as core koala habitat, with regulated vegetation, wetland and watercourses running through them, and both go under when the creeks come up. Walkers and riders cross on new 3.0 metre wide fibre composite spans with composite boardwalk approaches on new concrete abutments. Prefabrication kept crews and plant in the vegetated buffer for as short a time as possible.
The Fellmonger Park bridge had a live 150 mm steel water main fixed to its underside. Council's water and waste operations team bypassed the supply and de-activated the main before anything touched the structure, and we built the demolition, abutment and installation sequence around their windows. Because the new span had to carry the main afterwards, the soffit clearance, fixings and abutment geometry were all settled before fabrication. A prefabricated bridge cannot be adjusted once it comes off the truck.
