Compton Road Bikeway, Slacks Creek
A shared path for cyclists and walkers along Compton Road, Slacks Creek, lifted above the 100 year flood on four composite structures.
Riders and walkers on the Compton Road cycleway travel one continuous route across Slacks Creek, twice, and over the floodplain in between. Two composite fibre truss bridges, of 14.5 and 32 metres, and two boardwalk sections carry the 2.4 metre path, with the deck above the modelled Q100 flood level the whole way. The ramps hold accessible grades across ground that falls unevenly.
The corridor was already full. A sewer main runs beneath the boardwalk alignment and overhead power lines cross it at four points. Foundations were set out around the main and every lift worked inside exclusion zones under the conductors. The composite fibre structures were placed with plant that fits that space. The 32 metre span crosses the creek with nothing in the channel for flood debris to catch on, and grouted rock protects the abutments where the flow works hardest.
