Tin Can Bay Foreshore Footbridges

Three footbridges on the Tin Can Bay foreshore pathway, giving locals and visitors a continuous walk to the marina.

Three footbridges, at 8.0, 4.2 and 3.5 metres span, close the gaps in the Tin Can Bay foreshore pathway. Locals walk it in the morning and visitors use it to reach the marina, and it had three points where it stopped short. We removed the old bridge at one of them and built all three crossings to the Class 1 walking track standard: a broad, hard surface suitable for wheelchairs.

Badly placed rock can damage the foreshore it is meant to protect. The scour protection at each abutment was placed stone by stone onto a heavy geotextile filter, with dropping prohibited, which keeps the filter intact and the sediment plume down on a tidal shore. Composite fibre joists carry the deck just above the water, where rot and corrosion would do the damage, and hardwood handrail posts sit up where they can be unbolted and replaced from the path.
